The sensational experience of good design

What is good design? This is the question that was recently discussed by Edwin Heathcote in his article in the Financial Times. Heathcote starts by discussing a couple of sensible definitions of good design that were originally suggested by Dieter Rams. “Good design is as little design as possible” and Heathcote notes that this principle has inspired the design of the iPhone. “Good design,” according to Rams also “makes a product useful”.

But the author then hits the nail on the head when he puts forward his own theory of what constitutes good design. Heathcote suggest that design is not necessarily about the product – it is about the experience. Rather than being about what we are buying, it is more about how something feels and makes us feel.

This theory of design as experience is widely accepted in architecture and interior design. The architects Foster + Partners, who have designed iconic landmarks in London such as the Millenium Bridge and London City Hall, also believe that good design is all about experience. In fact they take this one step further as they claim that architecture should provide a seamless experience from outside to inside. It is all about the experience of the user taking into account light, materials used, the use of colour and other elements.

Zaha Ahid Architects have built on the outside inside principle and taken it a step further. Rather than a mere seamless experience from outside to inside, they believe in a symbiotic relationship between the two. They create transformative cultural, corporate, residential and other spaces that work in synchronicity with their surroundings.
